A little history and background: I first started playing with rope in the bedroom when I was 15 (1991!), I often joke that it was to ‘stop girls running away’ but there is probably a measure of truth in that! When I was 18 I was in Germany and found myself in a shop with a particularly good stock of magazines of the pornographic variety, obviously I had wandered into this place quite by accident, but among the magazines I accidentally purchased was one entirely focussed on Japanese rope bondage, the aesthetics of the imagery and the process in the sets appealed to me greatly, I was hooked and from then on I took my ropework alot more seriously.
Originally my rope bondage was entirely ‘bedroom based’, but I already had a style that concentrated on the aesthetics as well as the functionality. In 2004 my photographic work was largely based around artistic nudes, especially figure, as I was developing this and trying out new ideas I decided to include some rope bondage, primarily as a textural variation complimenting the skintones of my models, from there it grew into a major part of my work in it’s own right.
My rope bondage covers a range of styles now, I love the traditional japanese style with it’s associated aesthetics and it’s generally accepted as the origin of all rope bondage, but I also love the western styles that brings in different kinds of ropes, especially colours and also textures. Alot of my bondage work has been very ‘clean’ and precise in a carefully controlled studio environment which is one of the ways I love to work when shooting art-nudes, by 2006 I was needing to do something different so I spent 6 months taking rope bondage into the chaotic (when compared to a studio environment) homes of my models for a book project ‘London Bound’, the ropework still had that decorative quality but it was still much ‘rough and ready’ in it’s application as was the lighting for the photographs, very ‘raw’ and very ‘real’.
As well as my personal interests in rope bondage it will continue to be a large part of my photography work, I also rig various styles for other photographers who want to shoot rope bondage but don’t have the skills, time or resources to learn themselves, for those who do want to learn, photographers or anyone else, I do teach, usually very small groups or preferably 1-2-1 sessions. There is also a shop on ebay and here on my website with advice and ropes & hardware for rope bondage work, it’s all the stuff I use regularly myself.
